How many of you have made New years resolutions and stuck to them far? I was reading an article today in which a University study reported that only 8% of people who make New Year’s Resolutions will actually achieve them! They put this down to the fact that many people use the new year as an opportunity to make large bucket lists or attempt extreme makeovers, whether personal or professional.
Although it’s a nice aspiration to have, the average person has so many competing priorities that this type of approach is doomed to failure. Essentially, shooting for the moon can be so psychologically daunting, you end up failing to launch in the first place.
So this year, we’re encouraging you to keep your resolution list short and simple. In fact, we’ve even written a list of 10 things for you to start with….
Swap up your lattes and cappuccinos for an americano with a splash of milk. This will save you thousands of calories across the year and after a few weeks you’ll find a latte too rich to handle.
Decide to take the stairs instead of the escalator or lift with everyone that you encounter. Think how easy it is to get those extra steps in!
Learn to say ‘no’! If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it. Be polite and don’t give into somebody’s insistence if you don’t want to do it. Doing something you don’t want to for the sake of others will take too much energy from you.
Say ‘yes’ more! Being scared to do something is not a reason not to do it, use it as a it of a launchpad to take yourself out of your comfort zone. The only way to grow as a person is to make yourself uncomfortable every now and again. How do you know if you like it or not, if don’t give it a try!
Do something nice for someone else every day – say hello to a stranger, pay someone a compliment, make an actual phone call rather than text, write a letter. It doesn’t cost money to connect with someone, simple gestures can lift others and by doing something for someone else you’ll find your mood will improve too, a total win-win situation.
Do something that makes you happy / smile every day. Sit and read a couple of pages of a book; take 10 mins out of your day to walk outside, take a long bath, meet a friend for a cuppa, play your favourite song out loud, dance around the kitchen, cook your favourite meal at the same time! The list is endless, do something you love everyday – that’s what life is about!
If you’re bored of your present fitness / training plan, do something new. Try a NEW sport, fitness class, swimming, anything but do not be bored. The best exercise is something you enjoy, not the latest fad!
Don’t try to please everyone this year, you simply can’t. Make yourself a priority and then rest will fall into place.
Spend more time with friends and family, rather than working or endlessly scrolling online! Remember the greatest present you can gift someone is your time, because when you gift your time you are giving something that you will never get back.
Be true to yourself. Never let anyone distract you from your goals. If you can’t put your heart into it, then take yourself out of it!
How’s that list to start with? Keep your list short and simple and remember to only do things that are important to YOU – let’s make sure you’re part of the 8% this year!
Here’s to being the BEST version of yourself in 2019!
